Commonly Referred to as "Restraining Orders"
A protection order, often mistakenly called a "restraining order," is a type of court order that prevents an individual from interfering with the peace and space of another individual. The order may be temporary or permanent, but before a court will enter a permanent order it will hold a hearing. At the hearing, the person seeking protection, known as a petitioner, will present evidence and arguments against the person who the petition is sought. This second individual is known as a respondent. Generally, a protection order must be brought on grounds of domestic violence or stalking.
